For years now I have avoided watching movies. This started some time in the mid-90s and has continued until today.
There were a number of things that caused this. One was being in a situation where I was too time-poor and money-poor to sit in front of a screen for two hours and not feel guilty afterwards. One was the fact that I saw a bunch of awful nerd movies in a row (Event Horizon, Independence Day, Species, The Fifth Element, Tomb Raider, The Time Machine, plenty of others) and when I finally just skipped a couple altogether and realized the world didn’t end, it made skipping more of them a lot easier. These days it’s a pretty safe assumption that I’m not going to be seeing any given geek flick (many of the exceptions — Inception, The Hobbit Part One of Sixty-Two, Prometheus, The Social Network, District 9 — have not swayed me much on this.)
But this isn’t just going to the theater that I have a problem with, even though, yeah, I detest that experience. I also don’t watch that much on DVD. I just plain don’t like sitting in front of the TV without a game controller in my hands. Not because I’d rather be working on my Goldbach Conjecture proof, just…that’s not a thing I like to do. I have less of a problem doing stupid shit on the computer for three hours than watching a movie for two. I can’t explain it.
But I can realize that not only can I change that feeling — after all, this wasn’t always the case — but that I already have. I would have said the same thing about watching TV shows a couple years ago and now I regularly sit down for Elementary, Justified, Sleepy Hollow, and such. I also realize that I need to try and make such changes. I’m starting to feel like I’ve spent the last several years in a burlap sack, and it’s time I poked my head out of it.
So to help me move further, I’ve compiled a list of ten movies to see this year which I have not seen before. They are:
12 Years a Slave (2013) [watched!]
Apocalypse Now (1979) [watched!]
Fast and Furious (2009) [watched!]
M (1931) [watched!]
Ministry of Fear (1944) [watched!]
Pacific Rim (2013) [watched!]
The Asphalt Jungle (1950) [watched!]
The Big Lebowski (1998) [watched!]
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) [watched!]
Yojimbo (1961) [watched!]
I know that list is all over the place. It’s a mishmash of stuff I’ve been meaning to see, stuff I want to see, and stuff I kind of feel like I should see.
That’s TEN movies to sit down and make time for! And that’s not counting the ones I’ll probably see in the theater (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The LEGO Movie). Can I actually see an even dozen non-documentary movies in a year? I used to do it all the time. Let’s see if I can do it again.
