This was the only photo I took.
This weekend I winged down to Charlotte, NC, for HeroesCon. It was an odd choice for me, given that it’s a primarily comics-based show and my involvement with comics is pretty low these days. I was mostly going to meet and hang out with some of my Twitter pals and pals of theirs. However, once on the con floor, things changed.
It was impossible to be put into this huge mix of people of all ages, races, and genders, all just super enthusiastic about comics. I was hanging out and talking to folks of varying levels in the industry — simple fans to seasoned pros — and the one through-line was how much love there was for this crazy medium. It reminded me of why I originally got into it and why it still has hooks in me. I ended up spending way more money than I intended, and not just on Space Cabby sketches (speaking of, I got a bunch of new ones that I’ll be putting up over the next few weeks.)
Here’s the comics haul I got:
FIVE DOLLA TRADES:
Jane Austen’s Emma (Marvel adaptation by Nancy Butler and Janet Lee)
How to Fake a Moon Landing: Exposing the Myths of Science Denial by Darryl Cunningham, whose work I’ve seen online in the past and enjoyed.
Batman: Year One by oh, you know who. No, I’d never read it before. I have now.
EIGHT DOLLA TRADES:
Saga vol 1 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
Pirate Corp$, issues 1-4 by Evan Dorkin and I’m pretty sure I already have these in trades.– yep, I do.
Adam Strange Archives vol 3: I’d missed vol 3 when it came out and now it’s out of print, but I got a good deal on it.
The Legend of Ricky Thunder and I Can Kill Anything by Kyle Starks
Red Handed: The Fine Art of Strange Crimes by Matt Kindt. And yes, he burned my copy:
God Hates Astronauts by Ryan Browne
Hi, I’m Jordan and The Pretzel by Jordan Witt. Also Haint Hasslers by Jordan and Ken Lowery.
Marauders by Jordan Neves
Disarmed by Joe Hunter
Remedial Arithmedick, The Complete Illustrated Guide to Whipping Shitties, P.B.O.A.T., and I Know You’re Mad by Catie Donnelly
Untitled Monster Thing by Kyle Starks (see above).
Eras Fung and Socialfist by Luke Herr
Suffice to say, I am still making my way through this stack!
I met some awesome folks there, many of whom I already knew on Twitter, many of whom were pals of people I knew. Chad Bowers, Erica Henderson, Jordan Witt, Jon Hex, Joe Hunter, Kyle Starks, Jordan Neves, Robert Wilson IV, Catie Donnelly, Ziah Grace, Luke Herr, Chris Brown (not that one), Ming Doyle (who I’d briefly met before), and Neil Cicierega (ditto). Probably others I’ve forgotten because everyone was so cool I was a little overwhelmed.
I also saw fellow Bureau Chiefs Ken Lowery, Josh Krach, Andy Kunka, Chris Sims, and Matt Wilson! The latter two I was meeting in person for the first time!
And then, if that weren’t enough, I reconnected with my Illinois pals Chris and Christine, who I hadn’t seen in over a decade! We did some catching up over lunch and that was great!
I had a great time, met and re-met some wonderful folks, and fell in love with comics all over again. It was the best weekend and I’m so glad I went. Thanks to everyone!
