Ten

Today this blog is ten years old.

Holy cow. Ten years. A decade. I’ve been doing this thing for almost a quarter of my life.

I started out as Legomancer.net, which currently links to a Japanese spam blog. I was hosted on Slithytoves, the domain of my friends Kurt and Anna. At first it was just a collection of individual pages I made, such as the original Cool New Music pages. Most of that stuff isn’t on the web anymore.

On July 25, 2002, I installed (or more likely had Kurt install) Personal Weblog, a very straightforward and simple bit of blogging software. I then posted my first entry.

To play with it and add things to it I taught myself PHP and MySQL. The first major bit I added was The Linktank, which made its debut on June 10, 2003.

The Linktank is no more, having been moved to Delicious (which is kind of a shame, as The Linktank had character.) The last entry is dated December 14, 2004.

There was a page called “Stuff I Got” which at first was just an HTML document I’d update every now and then to talk about movies I’d seen, comics I’d read, CD’s I’d listened to, things like that, along with a rating based on the sides of an actual d6 I still have:

This page predated the weblog, and the last entry I have on it is dated October 5, 2001. On September 25, 2003, I unveiled LEGOpinions, a redone version of this material, now using PHP/MySQL. This was active until October 5, 2004.

I also added The Legonomicon (first announced on April 10, 2003), which was a neat idea I stole from Anna. It was just a sort of ticker-tape thing that kept track of movies, comics, books, and so forth that I had read or watched. No ratings, just listing them off. I don’t have any traces of this code anymore, and I don’t remember how it was done (it may just have been hard-coded HTML).

At some point it became replaced with a sort of news ticker which was MySQL/PHP run, and included things like birthdays and what I’d been up to, more than just media consumption. That change happened at the same time another change took place.

On February 20, 2005, I switched from Personal Weblog to WordPress. The blog was redesigned and, for the first time, comments were added (Personal Weblog didn’t have code for comments.) “Lanf” was the first reader to leave a comment.

On July 7, 2005, the blog changed its name from “Legomancer” to “Dave Ex Machina“. This was to reflect a number of things, most notably that the blog was about me, Dave Lartigue, and not an alias or handle. The url was still legomancer.net, though.

The next big change came on July 18, 2007, when I switched over to Dreamhost, moving away from my Slithytoves home. At this point the URL changed to daveexmachina.com and legomancer.net was allowed to lapse.

The most recent change to the site was earlier this year when I removed comments and changed the theme. The place was long overdue for a clean-up. I removed a bunch of stuff nobody (including me) cared about and put in a theme that was actually more than just me throwing together some html.

And that’s where we are now. Thank you so much for continuing to read my site. I appreciate every comment (yes, I know), link, and retweet. I know my readership isn’t huge, but I still appreciate it. I really enjoy doing this and hope to continue doing so for many more years. Thanks to all of you!

Considering that I couldn’t manage to blog for even one year, you hitting ten is an impressive achievement! Gratz!
