Long Live the New Template

So you’ve probably noticed that the site looks a little different. My previous theme, “lego”, was the generic WordPress theme all hacked to hell with various changes I’d made to it. It was pretty good and had its advantages (it was just three files, for one thing) but it also had a lot of drawbacks.

I still wanted to keep things simple, so I went with Weaver which is a clean, straightforward theme that was dead easy to customize. In fact, all of the customization I did was through Weaver’s options; I didn’t edit a single line of PHP in the template files.

One of the big advantages for Weaver is that it supports WordPress Widgets, and thanks to the Executable PHP widget I was able to bring some things over from the old template, such as the random image and the Time Machine.

So what’s missing? Two notable things, I think. First, the random quote in the header. I could probably bring it back (I could certainly add it to the sidebar) but I dunno. I figure everyone’s tired of those. Also the category images are gone, as they require adjusting the actual PHP files and I don’t want to do that. Those I don’t miss, though.

I haven’t found any problems with it yet, and think it looks nice and modern without losing too much from before. The BGG, Twitter, and Flickr things are on sort of probation at the moment, though. They may be too much clutter for me. We’ll see.

I’ll open comments on this post and you can let me know if you have any problems or suggestions.

And then I’ll stop talking about the site and go back to actually posting content on it.

I likes it. Clean design is good design.

I’m particularly annoyed with the new Blogger interface and about to switch to WordPress, so you tales gives me a) good hope and b) someone whose brain I can pick when I have hysterical problems!

Anyway, this looks v. clean and a solid, bright design.

Now allow us to snap other virtual Lego pieces onto the sidebar.

I didn’t like the style change at first, but I think that’s just because I don’t like change. The more you post, the more it grows on me. The only thing I still don’t like is the rounded corners on all the content boxes. Somehow, it feels “un-Lego” to me.
