Adventures in Bricklinking

This was an actual (more or less) conversation:

Me: I kind of lost my mind last night on Bricklink.

Dave T: Oh yeah? How much did you spend?

Me: Sixteen bucks.

Dave T: That’s nothing!

Me: It’s four pieces.

Dave T: Oh.

Me: Coming from Germany.

Dave T: What?

Me: It was actually cheaper to ship them from Germany than getting them in the US.

And here they are:

(And yeah, it’s more than four pieces, I misremembered. But the brown 1x1s were cheap, so they can count as one for our purposes.)

The bricks with “LL 928″ on them only came in one set, the Galaxy Explorer, back in 1979 (two per set). The slope with the Classic Space logo on it came in three sets (one of which was the Galaxy Explorer) in 1979 (one per set). So they’re hard to find. I actually didn’t want them to be in good condition, but that wasn’t possible. Thing is, I have these pieces already because I still have the parts and instructions for my Galaxy Explorer, which I got in 1979. but for my current purposes, which will be revealed in the fullness of time, I wanted a second set.

(I put in another order a few days later with a shop in the US. Yesterday that order was a week old, and I hadn’t received a ship notice yet. Turns out this place has a lot of customers giving negative or neutral reviews because they take forever to ship — something I wish I’d noticed before I placed my order. This morning I notice the order’s been “packed” but not shipped yet. So yeah, this place in the US will take longer to get stuff to me than the place in Germany.)

  1. Wow. I have those blue galaxy explorer blocks. Maybe I should sell them…

  2. Dave says:

Neil, it’s not that you’ll get a load of cash for them, it’s that they’re hard to find in one place.

  3. I had no idea there was a market for old Lego blocks at all. I’ve passed all my bricks on to my 5 yr old son, so I couldn’t possibly take any away from him, anyway.

I loved the galaxy explorer bricks. Used them to build a lot of spaceships over the years.

ANd I’d forgotten where they’d come from. So I’m now going to use this info to google lego galaxy explorer and relive a bit of my childhood…
