Ask the DungeonQuest Strategy Master!

Last night Matt and I played three games of DungeonQuest. Matt won twice, and won for real — got to the treasure chamber, grabbed some loot, and got out. If you’re thinking this means I won once, then you are unfamiliar with DungeonQuest; I died all three times.

That’s a pathetic showing, so I have hunted down the celebrated DungeonQuest Master to give me and others tips on how to win this notoriously lethal game.

———

DEAR DUNGEONQUEST STRATEGY MASTER: I pulled a room tile and the only exit was AWAY from the Treasure Chamber. What did I do wrong?

THE DUNGEONQUEST STRATEGY MASTER REPLIES: Dear DungeonQuest Neophyte: You drew the wrong tile, a typical beginner’s mistake. I would recommend remedial tile-drawing sessions. Just focus on that one aspect of the game until you get it right. Only after you’ve mastered tile-drawing should you allow yourself to consider the finer points of the game.

———

DEAR DUNGEONQUEST STRATEGY MASTER: A swinging blade just killed me because I didn’t roll equal to or under my armor (4). What do you advise?

THE DUNGEONQUEST STRATEGY MASTER REPLIES: Dear DungeonQuest Neophyte: First, don’t get discouraged – I too remember the days when the Swinging Blade seemed challenging. The proper strategy here is to roll lower than your armor rating, a move that seems obvious only in retrospect. The key to success in this game is anticipating the consequences of your actions!

———

DEAR DUNGEONQUEST STRATEGY MASTER: Thanks to your advice, I got to the Treasure Chamber! I’m about to draw my first card to see if the dragon wakes up. Please help! I don’t want to die!

THE DUNGEONQUEST STRATEGY MASTER REPLIES: Dear DungeonQuest Neophyte: This is the moment you have been journeying towards ever since your distant youth. It is a time for nimble feet, quick thinking, and steady hands! Unfortunately, all too often heroes who have made it thus far are brought low by pride; they unthinkingly and rashly flip over the Dragon Rages card to their detriment. The proper strategy here is to instead turn over all six Dragon Sleeping cards in succession, load yourself with loot, and then make a heroic exit!

I can’t believe I’m getting all this wisdom for free! Now I can’t wait to play DungeonQuest again. I am sure this time I’ll win survive get a few more tiles into the dungeon before dying!
