Best Music of the Oughts

I don’t usually do this sort of thing, but I decided to go ahead and list my twenty favorite albums from 2000-2009. Please use the comments to list your own favorites or to tell everyone that you’ve never heard of any of these bands.

First up we have entries 11-20, in alphabetical order by title.

Bleed American – Jimmy Eat World
Give Up – The Postal Service
I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass – Yo La Tengo
Let Go – Nada Surf
Talkie Walkie – Air
The Crane Wife – The Decemberists (I like bits of this and Picaresque more than either one of them alone, but this one squeaks out.)
The Lemon Of Pink – The Books
Sumday – Grandaddy
Thunder, Lightning, Strike – The Go! Team
Welcome Interstate Managers – Fountains Of Wayne

And now, my top ten albums for the decade, again only in alphabetical order.

Comfort Eagle – Cake
Drum’s Not Dead – Liars
Funeral – The Arcade Fire
Gorillaz – Gorillaz
Person Pitch – Panda Bear
Sea Change – Beck
Pixel Revolt – John Vanderslice
We Shall All Be Healed – The Mountain Goats (This or The Sunset Tree — both are great.)
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot – Wilco
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots – The Flaming Lips

If I had to pick a number one from that list, it would probably be Funeral, but they’re all pretty amazing.

I actually don’t buy that many entire albums these days, and if I made a list of songs it would be all over the place. But this is still a pretty good indication of where my musical head is.

It was fun making this list but honestly I can’t think of any other category I could make a similar list for. Maybe comics?

I have heard of 7 out of the 20 you have listed here and of those 7…5 where discovered through you! There are a couple of favorites I would like to add though.

    1. My Chemical Romance – Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade.

    2. Paramore – Riot! (before all the Twilight Bullshit)

  3. Dan says:

I have to second The Black Parade. It really is an amazing (and underrated) album. If I have listed 11-20, it would have been there for sure.

  4. Rob Barrett says:

    Funeral is amazing.
