I had a post all written in my head back around September 12, when all that teabagger protest foolishness was going on, but I was tired of hearing about it and didn’t want to add to the noise. But here’s what I had on my mind then, as now.
There has been a lot of talk about how this anti-Obama sentiment is essentially a racist thing, that it’s born out of the idea that a black man has somehow become President, which enrages the (largely white) tea party crowd. I think this is not completely accurate.
Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying there’s no racism involved. I think that element has more than proven itself to be there. But I don’t think the motivator is primarily racism. I think that’s just convenient.
In a sense, I think it’s worse than racism, because racism is something you have to have a mental age of more than three to really comprehend. I think in their case the situation is simply that for eight years they were coddled and spoiled, treated as though they were the most special people on Earth. And now the other half of the country wants to play in the sandbox and they’re pissed off that they don’t get it all to themselves anymore. Their idiot cries of taxation without representation means that they’re arguing that if their guy doesn’t win, they are being denied representation, so they are Constitutionally OWED a Republican in the White House forever.
I think that if Kerry or whoever were president now, we’d still be hearing these cries, only they’d be worded slightly differently. Someone is taking away something that is RIGHTFULLY THEIRS. The fact that it’s a black man no doubt is lovely confirmation of everything they think about black people, and believe me, they’re gonna roll with that, but I think if a white man were doing it we’d still see this same ignorant rage.
Right now they’re protesting health care simply because that’s what’s on the agenda. If Obama had led off with something else, they’d be against that as well. The issue itself doesn’t matter, just so long as Obama fails at it. If Obama had declared that Social Security needed to be farmed out to the private sector, as Bush had tried to do, they’d be up in arms about it, despite demanding a few years ago that we were in imminent danger of financial ruin unless we turned over peoples’ retirement incomes to the same financial alchemists who nearly melted down Wall Street.
Want proof? We got it today, in the form of the Olympic host bid. The US was pushing Chicago, and it was announced earlier that Chicago was out of the running. Who is cheering about this? Why, the Malkin- and Beck-led morons, that’s who, thrilled that this opportunity for the US is passing us by. In previous years they would have been outraged, but this year they’re thrilled. Why? Because Obama wanted Chicago and didn’t get it. Any failure for him — even if it’s a failure for the entire country — is a victory for them.
For eight years we had to endure how anyone who didn’t fall down and kiss George W. Bush’s feet hated America, was a traitor, and needed to leave the country — by force if necessary. Now these same folks have no problem hoping for disaster to befall the country, cheering when things go wrong, and of course running constant “chatter” about the blood of tyrants and armed insurrection (fortunately just the fevered masturbatory power fantasies of a few).
It’s not America these people love, it’s the sound of their own voices.

As someone who lives in Chicago and is an Obama supporter. Let me say this was a huge victory for America and Progressives. The incompetence and corruption behind Daley’s bid would have been a source of much scandal and frustration and ended up costing Chicago and American taxpayers billions. It would have been a weapon against the Democrats as well as a financial boondoggle.
We really did dodge a bullet here. If you think they right wing was bad now, they would have been awful when Chicago asked for a billion dollar bailout to pay for the games.
Just a billion? At that cost, we can’t afford NOT to host the Olympics!
