Essenhund

This is a somewhat more well dog:

After a few days of the ol’ baby food and rice, he’s back to normal! He had him some regular dog food today and seems to be keeping it down, we’ve been playing, he’s been a pain in the butt, he’s running around like a crazy dog, so he’s good as before!

But…not good as new. In the tests that were run to figure out what was up, he showed indications of liver problems and/or cancer. Now, let’s face it, he’s 13 or 14 years old, so that doesn’t come as much surprise. We knew it was only a matter of time before his little doggy body starts to give out.

The good news is, despite this situation, he’s not in any apparent pain. He’s full of energy, alert as ever, and can still jump up on the big bed without help, even though we’re going to try to make him a little ramp or something.

Our regular vet is out of town at the moment, but once he’s back we’re going to talk to him about diagnosis and treatment. Since Beebo isn’t uncomfortable at the moment, we’re not looking to do anything that will make him so. The emergency vet that we were referred to in the regular vet’s absence wanted me to sign off on two grand worth of tests and got snippy with me when I balked at doing so without talking to Becky first. (She also, I realized last night, re-prescribed for him — and charged me for — the exact same medicine the regular vet had already prescribed. It’s not like she didn’t have the records and the bottle of medicine right in front of her.) We want to carefully consider the options, weighing them against the fact that he is a pretty old dog, rather than rush in with both credit cards blazing. We love the guy, but we need to do what’s best for him, not what’s best for our consciences.

Then again, he’s nothing if not willful. I can totally picture him ten years from now, rolling around some doggie nursing home in a little wheelchair and bossing everyone around.

Thanks to everyone for their concern and their thoughts, and thanks especially to Allison, who provided some awesome information even though she doesn’t even know us! We will keep you all updated on how he’s doing, but right now all he’s doing is napping.

Hang in there, Beebo! And don’t let them put you in no nursing home. Insist upon home visits from some svelte registered-nurse poodle.
