Not long ago I wrote about how dismayed we’d become because our puny little GPS wasn’t strong enough to handle the tree cover around here, making Geocaching undoable. Well we got off our duffs and bought a new GPS unit, a Garmin eTrex Venture HC. It came in this week and we decided to give it a test spin.
(I first knew we were playing with power a couple days ago. Our previous unit often had difficulty locating the satellites when it was under heavy tree cover or in the car. This one found them while still in my house.)
There’s a cache on the Springfield College campus, so we headed out to find it.
Here’s Becky and Beebo beginning the hunt.
Beebo says, “Is this what you’re looking for?”
The Garmin eTrex Venture HC: More than up to the task!
Our old unit, depending on tree cover, hardly ever could get us closer than 50 feet of the cache before it just started flailing around, pointing in random directions. This one was accurate enough to get us within twelve feet of it. (Possibly closer. It was muddy and buggy so I didn’t spend a lot of time testing this out.)
If you’re looking for a GPS unit — for Geocaching — I can heartily recommend this one. It’s probably good for other uses as well; I haven’t played around with all the features yet.
I’m also extra pleased that we’ll now be able to go Geocaching again! Woo hoo!
