That’s a Really Keen Umbrella Ya Got There!

A few items of note regarding things Doctor Who.

First, This weekend I watched my first episode of Torchwood since the wretched Cyber-hottie one. It was “Reset”, and it featured Martha Jones as a guest to the Torchwood organization.

I had heard that this season they had tweaked the show somewhat, addressing a lot of the issues people had with the characters (and how they were all utterly miserable and charmless). This episode showed that. It was almost like a whole new show. Everyone had a task to perform and actually behaved like human beings. Even Ratface Owen was not repulsive, and possibly even likable. Ianto! Ianto actually existed as a character of his own!

And Martha! Dear, wonderful Martha! This was the Martha we’d been promised in “Smith and Jones”, the Martha who was pretty much gone by “Daleks in Manhattan”. She was smart, she was capable, and she had things to do other than swoon for the lead actor. Why didn’t we get this Martha for all of Season Three?

Anyway, I will be keeping an eye on this improved Torchwood.

Also this weekend I finally got the first issue of the new Doctor Who comic from IDW. The story wasn’t bad but good grief, the artwork. I don’t have a problem with the artwork taking on a certain level of cartoonishness but this stuff often bumped right up against downright inept.

I’ll stick with it for a while, but man the artwork grates.

Now, if you want to see some QUALITY Doctor Who artwork, have I got a treat for you. My cousin happened across some forgotten masterpieces. It’s him and me, doodling about Doctor Who in one of his notebooks.

Click on that one for more. It’s awesome stuff, I assure you. I imagine these were drawn some time around 1982 or so?

And no, I still don’t know when Season Four premieres.

Those were the days. “Hey Doc! That’s a really keen umbrella ya got there!” Now that is ART. And that K-9…What an actor! HAHA! Good Stuff!

Haven’t read the first Doctor Who issue yet, but my DCBS shipment came this morning, so I’m looking forward to getting to it tonight. I have my qualms about the art based on what I’ve seen already, but if we can get through this, we’ll eventually get to Pia Guerra, and that’ll help me keep going, at least.

And while I enjoyed last season of Torchwood (and my wife became obsessed with it), this season has definitely improved by leaps and bounds. Jack is more like the Jack we knew before, Ianto has stuff to do (and is often quite funny), Rhys(!) is less grating, and everyone else is generally more pleasant to watch. It’s fun to watch a show actually address its problems.
