Japanese Guy #1: We need to come up with a scary monster for our new Godzilla movie.

Japanese Guy #2: You know what’s scary? Moths!

    Japanese Guy #1: Genius!

I will brook no Mothra bashing, not even from you, sir. For my money, the very reason Mothra is so cool is that she’s such an unlikely monster.

From her very first appearance, she’s of a different stock than the rest of the Toho Studios pantheon. First off, while most are either genderless or presumed to be male, Mothra is explicitly female. She’s a monster of spectacle rather than terror; her size is monstrous, not her temperment. Mothra bears no ill-will toward humans, except when they kidnap and exploit her freaky twin princesses. It’s only then that she unleashes the fury that only a titanic moth can.

And now, sing along with Mothra’s priestesses! (Note: Mothra is “Mosura” in Japan.

    Mosura ya Mosura!
    Dongan kasakuyan indoo muu
    Rosuto uiraadoa, hanba hanbamuyan
    Randa banunradan tounjukanraa
    Kasaku yaanmu
    Mosura ya Mosura!
    Yasashisasae wasure
    Hito no kokoro inorinagara
    Utai, ai no uta!

M is for the many things she gave me
O means only that she’s growing old
T is for the tears she shed to save me
H is for her heart of purest gold
R means radiation that mutated her
A means always thankful will I be
Put them all together, they spell MOTHRA
A word that means the world to me
