Crisis of Infinite Choices!

Holy cow, there’s so much stuff in the newest Previews! Help! I am WAY over the limit here, folks, and I need help sifting through them! Here’s the stuff that grabbed my eye on first and second flip-through.

  • Perhapnauts #1 (Dark Horse)
  • Sexy Chix TPB (Dark Horse) – I still think the title and cover are lame, but I’m interested in the contents.
  • Showcase Presents: Jonah Hex Vol 1 (DC) – Don’t know much about Jonah Hex, actually. If I’m interested in checking out a solid chunk of Western comics, would this be a good place to go?
  • Ocean TPB (DC) – Warren Ellis is one of the few people even trying to do interesting sci-fi comics, so I’m down wid it.
  • DMZ #1 (DC) – The first of two Brian Wood joints, and the one I’m most leery of. I felt that Channel Zero was pretty juvenile, so on the one hand this could be more of the same, but on the other, he might have a more mature view on his subject now. I could go either way on this one.
  • The Losers: Close Quarters TP (DC) – I liked the first two TPBs well enough, but I have to admit that by the third one I had kind of lost interest, so this one’s iffy.
  • Rock’n’Roll One-Shot (Image) – Moon and Ba have everyone a-twitter about their stuff, so this is a good chance to check it out.
  • Walking Dead vol 4: Heart’s Desire TP (Image) – I quit buying this in single so I could buy it in trade, but I can’t say I’ve really missed it. Possibly on the chopping block.
  • Five Fists of Science (AIT) – Looks fun, great art!
  • Pizzeria Kamikaze TP (Alternative) – Here we get into the stuff I really have no clue about. Anyone know about this?
  • Rex Libris #2 (Amaze/SLG) – I enjoyed the first one, so I’ll give it another shot.
  • Wimbledon Green HC (D&Q) – I really want this but oy, the price!
  • Night Fisher GN (Fantagraphics) – Again on the cusp here. Looks nice, sounds like it could be a good read, but I’m just not sure about the subject. We’ll see.
  • Knights of the Dinner Table #109 (Kenzer)
  • Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man GN (La Mano) – A chance to check out this creator, who I’ve heard a lot about.
  • Local #1 (Oni) – I felt Demo kind of fizzled out towards the end, but I’ve only heard raves about Local, so I’m on board.
  • Strangetown #1 (Oni)
  • Doctor Who Endgame TP (Panini) – A must-have for me but damn, these things are expensive.
  • Fortean Times #204 (FT) – I really need to subscribe to this.

This enormous list towers to the heavens, mocking the gods themselves with its lofty heights! Help! I need suggestions! What’s essential? What’s dismissable? And, god help me, what have I overlooked?

My advice is to drop Rex Libris and Orbit. I, too, bought RL but I thought it was, well, just not very good. And Orbit (or Orbiter, I can’t remember) starts strong but peters out toward the end. Just borrow my issues and you’ll see what I mean.

Oops, make that “Ocean” not all those other “o” words I was throwing out into the cold darkness of space.

  3. Zed says:

Ditto TJ re Ocean. A promising start; ending failed to deliver on things I felt the story promised; issue 5 (I think it was) contained one of the stupidest lines I’ve encountered in any comic; issue 6 depended on events so patently impossible they’d spoil a superhero comic for me, let alone a nominally science fictional one.

I’m a huge Warren Ellis fanboy whore and even i thought that the ending to Ocean was, um, untidy. The art was still awesome, though.

I like Desolation Jones a lot, though, and Fell #1 is promising.

    Hi Zed!

Sounds like Ocean is definitely out, then. I’m not a huge Warren Ellis fan (I’m not sure you could PAY me to read Desolation Jones) but he’s the only guy out there doing books like this. If only he was doing them well.
